General League Information
What is the Nutmeg State Youth Baseball League?
The Nutmeg State Youth Baseball League is a Connecticut youth baseball league providing competitive summer play for Cal Ripken and Little League teams ages 8U-12U.
Who can participate in the league?
As a Connecticut youth baseball league, the only requirement is that your team is from the state of Connecticut!

How are teams organized?
Teams are organized by age divisions by age (8U, 9U, 10U, 11U, and 12U).
How competitive is the league?
The league is designed for a mix of competitive and developmental play, allowing teams to prepare for future seasons. Coaches are able to select which teams to schedule for their season which allows flexibility in playing a variety of competition.
How many games does each team play?
Teams are allowed to schedule as many games as possible during the regular season. In order to participate in the playoffs, each team needs to play in a minimum of 8 regular-season games.
Where are the games played?
Games are hosted by participating teams so you can choose to travel as little or as much as you’d like.
Is there a limit to the number of teams per division?
We aim to accommodate as many teams as possible, but divisions may have capacity limits based on interest.
Does the league provide uniforms?
No, teams are responsible for their own uniforms.
Do I need insurance to participate in this league?
Yes, each team is required to submit proof of insurance prior to the start of the season. Little League teams should check to ensure that their insurance policy allows them to play outside of Little League prior to participating in the NSYBL. If necessary, a binder can be added to the policy to allow play outside of Little League.
Who needs to be added for "Additional Insured"?
During the regular season, there is no ‘additionally insured’ pertaining to NSYBL however in order to participate in playoffs which take place at Acorn Hill in Woodbridge, teams need to add the following as additionally insured:

Registration & Fees
How do you register for the league?
Registration is completed online through the LeagueBrain app once the registration period begins.
What is the registration deadline?

How much does it cost to register a team?
During our inaugural season, all teams are invited to participate at no cost!
When is the registration fee due?
Any fees due upon registration are to be paid at the time of registration in order to hold your spot.
What does the registration fee cover?
Team fees cover the cost of league administration, access to LeagueBrain (scheduling, standings, communication), and postseason awards.
Are there any additional costs?
Teams are responsible for their own uniforms, umpire fees, and field costs, if applicable.
Can individual players register or must they be part of a team?
At this time, the league only accepts full team registrations; individual players should connect with local teams.
What payment methods are accepted?
We accept credit/debit cards and online payments through our registration portal.
Are refunds available if a team withdraws?
Refunds may be available before the registration deadline, but fees are non-refundable once the season schedule is released.
What happens if not enough teams register for a specific division?
We will either merge divisions, adjust scheduling, or offer refunds if necessary.
How can I confirm that my team’s registration is complete?
You will receive a confirmation email once your registration and payment are processed.
Divisions & Eligibility
How are the divisions structured?
The league is divided into five age groups: 8U, 9U, 10U, 11U, and 12U.
How is age eligibility determined?
Players must meet the age requirements as of April 30th of the current year, based on Little League/Cal Ripken age rules.
Can players "play up" in an older division?
Yes, players may compete in an older division if their team allows it.
Can players "play down" in a younger division?
For the sake of safety, no players are allowed to play down into a younger division.
Do teams have to be affiliated with a specific league?
No, independent teams are also welcome as long as they meet eligibility requirements and are based out of Connecticut.
Can a player be on multiple teams?
Yes! A player can play for more than one team as long as they are in different age divisions. For example, a player can play on an 11U team as well as a 12U team however they cannot play on more than one team in an age division.
What are the roster size requirements?
Teams must have a minimum of 10 players and a maximum of 20 players.
Can rosters be changed after registration?
Roster changes can be made up until the season starts. After that, rosters are locked in the team portal.
Are guest players allowed?
Once the season begins, only those players who are on an official roster may play for a team.
Do players need proof of age?
Yes, teams must provide proof of age (e.g., birth certificates) upon request.
Scheduling & Game Format
How is the schedule created?
The schedule is collaboratively created by all of the coaches in each division. Once the registration period has ended coaches will be provided with the contact information for all of the other teams in the league. At that time, coaches will be able to schedule games and enter them into LeagueBrain.
How are points calculated for standings?
Win vs lower age division: 2 points
Win vs same age division: 3 points
Win vs higher age division: 4 points
Ties (any division): 2 points
Losses (any division): 1 point
Forfeit: -1 point
How many games does each team play?
Each team schedules their own games with no limit to how many are scheduled. In order to participate in the playoffs, a team will need to have 8 games of record.
Are games played on weekends or weekdays?
Games are scheduled for both weekdays and weekends, depending on field availability and team preferences.
Where do teams play their games?
Each team hosts home games at their own field and can choose to travel as much or as little as they want.
Can teams schedule additional non-league games?
Yes, teams can coordinate additional scrimmages, but non-league games will not count toward standings.
How are tiebreakers handled in standings?
Tiebreakers follow this order: head-to-head record, runs allowed, runs scored, and coin flip (if necessary).
Do "out of league" games versus league opponents count towards NSYBL standings?
Absolutely! If you are scheduled to play a NSYBL team in an outside tournament such as a Cal Ripken or Little League tournament game that game also counts in the standings for NSYBL. In order to get the game into LeaguBrain, make sure the home team schedules it and reports the result.
League Rules & Policies
What rules does the league follow?
The league follows the Cal Ripken Baseball Rulebook with a few modifications for summer play. For a full list of rules, check out the rules page.
Is there a pitch count rule?
Yes, pitch counts follow age-specific limits to protect young arms. To learn more about the NSYBL pitch regulations check out the pitching rules page.
Which baseballs are used for this league?
There is not one official league baseball for the NSYBL. Ripken teams use the Rawlings RCAL1 ball while Little League teams generally use an equivalent Rawlings baseball stamped RLLB1. Either of these balls are fine and are pretty standard for town league play.
Are there bat restrictions?
The league follows USA Baseball bat standards for all age groups.
Are umpires provided by the league?
For this first season, umpires will be arranged by the home team and must meet league certification requirements. Umpire rates are set by the local board of the home team.
What is the umpire fee?
Umpires are paid based on the rate established by their local board. Visiting teams should coordinate with the home team in order to figure out the umpire fees in advance.
How many umpires should be on the field for a game?
All age groups will have one umpire for regular season games. The umpire makes the call as to whether they are behind the plate or behind the pitchers mound. In the playoffs, all games should have two umpires.
Playoffs & Championships
How do teams qualify for playoffs?
All teams are welcome to compete in the postseason tournament. The only prerequisite is having completed 8 games of record.
When do playoffs start?

What is the playoff format?
Playoffs are single-elimination.
Where are playoff games played?
Higher-seeded teams host games until the championship round.
Is there an admission fee for championship games?
No, championship weekend is free for players and spectators.
Weather & Cancellations
How are rainouts handled?
The home team decides on cancellations and must notify the league through the LeagueBrain portal.
Can games be rescheduled?
Yes, but both teams must agree on a makeup date.
What happens if a game is suspended due to weather?
Games completed through 4 innings (3.5 if the home team is winning) are considered official. If a game is called before reaching those thresholds, it is considered suspended and resumed the next day only in the playoffs (regular-season games are not suspended). If the away team is leading or the game is tied and the home team has not completed their at-bat, the game reverts to the last completed inning. If that inning meets the criteria for an official game, the result stands. If the home team is leading when the game is called, they are not required to complete their at-bat for the game to be final.
How will we be notified of cancellations?
Coaches will receive an email/text update through LeagueBrain.
Do umpires have final say on weather conditions?
Yes, umpires can suspend or cancel games if conditions are unsafe.
